Portugal made its first appearance in a major football tournament in 1966, at the FIFA World Cup in England. The team defeated North Korea 5-3 in the last eight of the World Cup to progress to the semi-finals for the first time in their history. However, England ended Portugal's memorable debut at the FIFA World Cup with a 2-1 win at Wembley Stadium in the semi-finals.
After missing four World Cups in 1970, 1974, 1978, and 1982, Portugal's national football team qualified for the 1986 FIFA World Cup, held in Mexico. However, they finished last in Group F and were eliminated from the tournament in the group stage.
At their third FIFA World Cup appearance, held in South Korea and Japan in 2002, they only advanced to the Group stage.
