Mayank Agarwal Indian Premier League Career
Mayank Agarwal announced himself to the cricketing world when he slog-swept the very first ball he ever faced in the Indian Premier League (IPL) for a six, which was bowled by Muttiah Muralitharan, way back in 2011.
He was daring, and that was noticeable. However, he struggled with consistency. For the amount of talent he has, Agarwal underperformed in the IPL from 2011 to 2018. Even then, teams knew that he had talent, and that’s why he kept on getting picked.
Between 2011 and 2018, he played for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), Delhi Daredevils, and Rising Pune Supergiant, but he rarely ever lived up to his potential during that phase. Agarwal found his footing once he joined Punjab Kings (PBKS) in 2018.
Between 2019 and 2022, he emerged as one of the most prolific batters of the IPL, having scored an average of 400 runs per season. His batting flourished in domestic cricket, and he also sparkled when he was given a chance to play for India in international cricket.
In IPL 2021, with 441 runs, Mayank was the ninth-highest run-scorer in the league. However, his team, PBKS, still did not do well. In fact, PBKS has not been doing well for quite a few years despite Mayank scoring tons of runs. In 2022, he captained PBKS to improve his team’s record, but his own performance dipped.
Mayank Agarwal played for SunRisers Hyderabad in the IPL 2023, as the franchise bought him for Rs. 8.25 Cr at the IPL 2023 auction in Kochi. He is currently a member of the SRH team.
Mayank Agarwal IPL Auction Summary
Mayank Agarwal’s IPL paycheque was nothing much to write home about till 2021. He was getting Rs 1.6 crore per year from Delhi Capitals, which remained the same when he joined Rising Pune Supergiant in 2017.
His performance was quite erratic in those years, and therefore when PBKS picked him up in 2018, they paid him only Rs 1 crore. Even though Mayank played well with the bat between 2018 and 2021, his IPL paycheque did not grow.
However, in IPL 2022 auctions, he was one of the few players retained by the Punjab franchise. Later, he was also made the captain. Consequently, his IPL paycheque reached a whopping sum of Rs 12 crore in 2022, making him one of the most expensive IPL players. However, management decided to part ways with him, and Punjab Kings released Agarwal ahead of the IPL 2023 mini-auction. In IPL 2024, he is purchased by SRH
