Liam Livingstone IPL Auction Summary
Liam Livingstone turned out to be quite a showstopper in the first round of the TATA IPL 2022 auction on Day Two, with Punjab Kings trumping in a fierce bidding. The bidding was initially between Kolkata Knight Riders and Chennai Super Kings, but soon thereafter, Punjab Kings and Gujarat Titans joined in. Sunrisers Hyderabad jumped in at Rs 10 crore, but Punjab Kings were determined and had the last laugh, bagging the 28-year-old all-rounder for Rs 11.50 crore.
Given that Livingstone struck 27 sixes in The Hundred in 2022, including 10 in one game, one can hardly doubt his talent with the bat. Besides, his handy spinning skills can hardly be ignored! Equipped with the ability to turn the ball both ways, he was clearly seen by Punjab as an all-rounder.
Cricket enthusiasts often feel that there’s seemingly a paradox in Livingstone’s cricket in terms of acceptance. Unlike the English cricket hierarchy who feels he is fit only for the shorter formats, former England cricketers believe he has the potential to make his presence felt in any format.
Livingstone’s T20I strike-rate is 166.87, but the Lancastrian has seven first-class hundreds as well.
English cricket might still have some reservations as far as Livingston’s all-round cricket prowess is concerned, but the IPL auction this year was proof enough that Indian franchises hold him in very high regard, making him the most expensive overseas pick at the auction yet.
