Kagiso Rabada Indian Premier League Career
Kagiso Rabada’s IPL career kicked off in 2017 when he was bought for 50 million by the then-Delhi Daredevils, now referred to as Delhi Capitals. Rabada's bowling talent shone in all its glory despite playing only six matches with 6 wickets.
Rabada made his IPL debut for the Delhi franchise in 2017, where he was pretty promising despite having a short stint. He missed the entire 2018 season due to an unfortunate injury. A stronger and more experienced Rabada returned and set the IPL 2019 edition ablaze! He finished only one wicket behind the Purple Cap holder Imran Tahir, despite having played five games fewer.
He brought the same form to the UAE in IPL 2020, extending his streak of IPL games with at least one wicket to a staggering 25. With 30 wickets and the Purple Cap, he helped Delhi Capitals get to their first-ever IPL final in the 2020 edition. South Africa pacer was later acquired by Punjab Kings in the IPL 2023 for Rs. 9.25 Cr and will continue to play for the same franchise in the IPL 2024.
Kagiso Rabada Stats - IPL Batting & Bowling
It's generally the young bunch of tearaway pacers that make cricket enthusiasts sit up and take notice, solely for their fiery speed and bounce, that can intimidate anybody. Kagiso Rabada is often touted as what can be called an 'optimum combination'. No wonder when the 20-year-old Rabada made his cricket debut against India in November 2015, the consensus was that he had great potential but must be honed suitably. The South African team was taken by surprise by the prodigy, who assured them with his performances that the future of the nation's fast bowling was in safe hands.
The rise of Rabada had certainly grabbed eyeballs by this point as he was bought for Rs. 5 crores at the IPL auction in 2017 to play for Delhi Daredevils, and for 4.2 crores at the 2018 auction as the Daredevils used their RTM card to retain their bowling champion.
Rabada can swing the ball conventionally and has the pace to reverse-swing the ball against the direction of the seam, with the old ball and new. Besides, he has already wreaked havoc with the old ball several times in his brief Test career. Despite being so young, these skills and the control and consistency he bowls with make him a valuable asset to the South African side - one who can be counted on in the long run.
Kagiso Rabada IPL Auction Summary
Punjab Kings spent a massive Rs. 9.25 crores to rope in South African speedster Kagiso Rabada. The franchise made Rabada their most expensive signing at the mega auction of IPL 2022. The new team Gujarat Lions were also keen to rope him in, but finally, Punjab Kings broke the bank for the fast bowler.
Considered one of the fastest bowlers in the cricket world right now, Rabada was roped in by Delhi Capitals (DC) in the 2017 auction for Rs. 5 crores. A back injury compelled him to miss the 2018 season, but he has been a critical part of their team since 2019. The credit for DC having made it to the playoffs in 2019 and 2021 goes to Rabada’s wickets in those campaigns. The fast bowler emerged as the highest wicket-taker in the 2020 edition, aiding DC to qualify for their maiden finals.
In the IPL mega auction 2022, the 26-year-old had kept his base price of Rs. 2 crores. Much to everyone’s surprise, his price tag saw a steep rise by 4.625 times with a hike of 462.5% as PBKS acquired him for Rs. 9.25 Cr. Having made 63 IPL appearances, the right-arm fast bowler has won 99 wickets with an average of 19.86. His economy rate stands at 8.26, with the best bowling figures of 4/21.
