IPL History - Where and How It All Began
A professional men’s Twenty20 league, the Indian Premier League (IPL) pits ten teams against each other, which are based out of ten Indian cities. Founded by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in 2007, IPL usually takes place between March and May every year. Unknown to many, the IPL is the most-attended cricket league globally. In 2014, it was ranked sixth in terms of average attendance among all sports leagues. In 2010, the IPL became the first sporting event to be broadcast live on YouTube.
The very objective behind IPL was to attract a whole new generation of sports fans throughout the country. And this has actually worked! Thanks to the dynamic Twenty20 format, the young audience base, including women and children, turned out to be cricket enthusiasts once the IPL took off.
On 13 September 2007, when India emerged victorious at the 2007 T20 World Cup, BCCI announced a franchise-based Twenty20 cricket competition called Indian Premier League. The first season, slated to start in April 2008, was planned as a "high-profile ceremony" in New Delhi.
BCCI Vice-President Lalit Modi, who spearheaded the concept behind IPL, delineated the details of the tournament, including its format, the prize money, franchise revenue system and squad composition rules. Following a similar format as that of the Premier League of England and the NBA in the United States, the IPL came to be run by a governing council composed of former India players and BCCI officials. It was also decided that the top two teams of the IPL would qualify for that year's Champions League Twenty20. Modi went on to clarify the idea of IPL had been underway for two years, and it was not started as a "knee-jerk reaction" to the ICL.

Mohammed Shami was the winner of Purple Cap in IPL 2023 by picking up 28 wickets in 65 overs, while Yuzvendra Chahal was the winner of the Purple Cap in IPL 2021 by picking up 27 wickets. Only Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Dwayne Bravo have received this honor twice among the several players who have donned the Purple Cap. Bhuvneshwar Kumar is the only player to have won the Purple Cap for two consecutive seasons, i.e. in 2016 and 2017, as he picked up 23 and 27 wickets respectively.

IPL History - Orange Cap Holders
The Orange Cap is awarded to the batter who scores the maximum runs in a particular season. Juggled around from one batsman to another as the IPL group stages proceed, this award is finally conferred on the batsman with the most runs as the tournament draws to a close. The batsman holding the Orange Cap during the season has to wear it on the field during the matches, as long as he retains the position of the highest run-getter in the tournament. When it comes to a tie situation, the batsman with a better strike rate is awarded the Orange Cap.
Brendon McCullum became the first player to win the IPL Orange Cap, whereas Shaun Marsh emerged as the first winner. Aussie Cricketer David Warner has won the Orange Cap thrice in 2015, 2017 and 2019. He is followed by Chris Gayle (He is also known as Sixer king of IPL), who has been its recipient twice. While Virat Kohli holds the record for most runs in IPL as his tally of 973 runs for RCB in 2016, Shubman Gill is the highest run scorer in 2023 with the runs tally of 890.

Spot-Fixing Scandal in IPL History
The history of IPL will remain incomplete without mentioning the 2013 scam in the form of a spot-fixing and betting case. The episode came to the limelight when the Special Cell of the Delhi Police arrested three cricketers representing the former champions Rajasthan Royals on spot-fixing charges. Along with these three cricketers, namely S Sreesanth, Ajit Chandila and Ankeet Chavan, 11 bookies were also arrested, on May 15, 2013. One of the bookies, Jiju Janardhanan, was believed to be Sreesanth’s cousin.
Both the franchises involved, Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals, were banned for their involvement in the spot-fixing scandal. The ban, announced by the Justice Lodha Committee, was for two years, 2016 and 2017. It was particularly disappointing for the fans of Chennai Super Kings, as the team has always been intense competition for Mumbai Indians and had come pretty close to winning the IPL title. The team has an enormous number of followers, thanks to ‘Thala Dhoni’. No wonder the suspension of CSK came as a massive shock to IPL followers.
The leading officials of the two franchises, Raj Kundra of Rajasthan Royals and Gurunath Meiyappan of CSK, suffered a life ban from all the cricket matches conducted by BCCI. When the team had a comeback in the 2018 season, it was an emotional moment for fans. The way the team made up for the lost years with exceptional performance is commendable. What’s more, Chennai Super Kings fans got a chance to witness their favorite team win the trophy again in 2018. The return of CSK proved the strength and determination of the captain MS Dhoni and the team players. In 2019, CSK made its way to the final against Mumbai Indians; however, it lost to MI by just one run.
